Twitter launches Vine Kids: family-friendly video sharing

02 February 2015

Two years after launching the original Vine, Twitter has rolled out a new, kid-centric version of the popular video-sharing app.

Simply dubbed Vine Kids, the family-friendly Vine spin-off was revealed on January 30. Vine Kids is aimed specifically at children between 5 and 12 years old, and will deliver kid-safe content such as cartoons, animal videos and clips from programs such as Sesame Street.

Videos last for six seconds and play on a loop, with children able to swipe right to move onto the next Vine. Users won’t need to sign up for a Vine account in order to watch videos, but children wanting to upload their own content will need to do so through a parent’s Vine profile.

Vine Kids won’t feature any cross-posted content from the regular Vine app, and all videos so far have been screened and hand-picked by Vine’s editors. The idea reportedly came about after Vine staff realised the popularity of the app with their own children, and set about designing a safer version with age-appropriate videos.

Child-proof tech

The under-12 demographic has been the focus of several recent announcements from tech companies, including Google’s confirmation that it will be releasing children’s versions of applications such as Chrome, YouTube and Google search.

Like Google, Twitter and Vine will need to abide by strict regulations in order to protect the privacy of under-age users.

Vine has already responded to privacy concerns by stating it collects no personal data from children outside of what is provided to the app from parents, such as names and email addresses used when contacting customer support.

If you’re looking for a kid-safe mobile app - without the worry that your child will come across something saucy - the Vine Kids app is available free from the App Store for iOS devices.

And if you're looking for a way to make your phone or tablet more kid friendly, we can help you with that too.
