Samsung Galaxy C Could Be a Tipping Point for Mid-range Smartphones

18 April 2016

With the success Samsung found when switching from plastic to metallic builds, the Korean manufacturer is going to see what kind of an effect this approach will have in the mid-range market. The Samsung Galaxy C line will reportedly be all-metal.

As far as specs go, the Galaxy C5 will be a lot less flashy than we’ve come to expect metallic smartphones to be.

That’s not a bad thing. Mid-range phones are supposed to go light on the hardware, in order to lessen the load on your wallet. Just exactly how much cheaper the C5 will be is still anyone’s bet, but a sighting of the “Samsung SM-C5000” on Geekbench might indicate some specs.

  • Processor: Snapdragon 617
  • RAM: Somewhere between 4GB and 3GB.
  • OS: Android 6.0.1

Exclusive to the Chinese market, the Galaxy C series will launch in May. Even if the rest of the world never gets a chance to place their greedy mitts on one, this could still be an indication of things to come.

Apple has just reaffirmed its budget iPhone line with the new iPhone SE, a phone with an all-metal body just like the iPhone 5s it replaced. If Samsung follows suit, that places the two largest manufacturers in the world as metal-bodied mid-tier proponents. With that kind of pressure, it shouldn’t be too long before we see the competition follow suit.
