First 128GB microSD card introduced by SanDisk

SanDisk has shown off the first 128GB microSD card at MWC in Barcelona. Happily, the card supports SDXC, which means that it should be compatible with most modern phones with microSD slots. Before you leap online to buy one we suggest checking your user manual to double check that your phone also supports SDXC microSD; you don’t want to find out the hard way.

Currently the chip is for sale in the US exclusively from Amazon and Best Buy, priced at US$119.99.

The card itself uses a proprietary technique whereby 16 memory die are stacked vertically on top of one another, each is thinner than a single strand of hair. It has a read speed of 30MB/s and is waterproof, temperature-proof, magnet-proof and shockproof. It also comes with an adaptor to full-sized SD if you want to switch it between your phone and a laptop or digital camera.

What would you even use 128GB for on a phone?

Plenty of stuff. 128GB would mean that you can store entire seasons of TV shows, multiple HD movies, almost limitless songs, and all manner of high-res photos.

The current gen of top-tier smartphones are introducing 4K video capture, which may sound cool but it takes up a heck of a lot of storage space, especially if you’re limited to the standard 16GB or 32GB.

Cameras are getting pretty crazy too. 13MP-20MP has become the norm, while some camera’s like Nokia’s PureView Lumia 1020 go up to a crazy 41MP. All of those extra pixels need to be kept somewhere, and it’s better to have enough storage to not worry about it than to be constantly managing your phone’s hard drive.

Don't forget that you'll also be able to use this on any compatible tablet, many of which get used far more often for media-related purposes than their smaller counterparts.

It’s impressive to think about technologies like this and the humble origins from whence they came. Just 10 years ago we were marvelling at 128MB microSD cards, now we have improved upon that 1000x in a single decade. If things keep going we’ll be looking at 128 terabytes on something the size of a fingernail in another 10.
