Facebook’s latest move to make fans furious, briefly

10 April 2014

Facebook has announced that members using the chat functionality through the site’s smartphone app will soon need to download the dedicated Facebook Messenger app to continue communicating.

Cue the flaming torches and pitchforks.

For as much as we love new technologies, the online community also hates change, and there is likely to be backlash against the social network, at least until people download the messenger app and see that it actually improves the experience of chatting on Facebook.

With the Messenger app, users can do many things they cannot do with the stand alone Facebook tool. Voice calls is the stand-out example, but it opens up a world of multimedia sharing, too.

So, long story short, download the Facebook Messenger app now and use it to moan to your friends about the change.
