"Turning the phone on, the Android interface feels quick to respond and its animations are nice and smooth – there's no stutter vision here. Powering the Xperia P along is a dual-core 1GHz chip (the NovaThor U8500 with Mali-400MP graphics, to be precise), which may sound a little weedy compared to the quad core, 1.5GHz models topping the charts but in practise it's plenty fast enough. "The earpiece on the Sony Xperia P is surely among the best ones we have heard lately. It does an excellent job delivering clear, natural vocal tones that are free of distortion even at the loudest setting. The microphone's performance is also well above the average as it captures voices that sound loud and distinct on the other side of the line. " 8.5/10 Stars

"The Sony Xperia P is an excellent package, and one of few to offer this much in its price range. But you might want to hold off until Sony finally release the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update (it's expected in Q3), when its price will have settled to a lower level and the bang for the buck ratio will have gone sky-high."

"Capable of producing strong results both in stills and video modes, the handset's camera capabilities will leave you with a clear conscience when venturing out without your dedicated compact snapper." 4/5 Stars

"Sony opts for a 4-inch screen for the P, with a qHD (960x540-pixel) resolution, and, while this adds up to far fewer pixels per inch than you find on the HD screen of the Xperia S, it isn't a big issue for this phone. The screen here is sharp and colourful, though the colour-banding issue we've seen on recent Sony releases is still evident, unfortunately." 7.5/10

"Call quality is typically strong, with good noise cancellation on busy streets. If anything, the earpiece could benefit from being a little more potent. While our test calls were fine on the other end, we often had trouble hearing their replies in busy situations."

"Reception and call quality were also top-notch, and no one I spoke with had any complaints. The loudspeaker and mic both performed admirably when in speakerphone mode. " 7.3/10

"The illuminated transparent strip at the bottom is not simply for show this time around, but they actually function as capacitive buttons, unlike the S, which had the buttons above it. The response is good and even a light press triggers an action." 7/10

"The curved back and the angles of the edges make it feel secure to grip, even though the metal unibody design is inherently slippery. The great advantage over the plastic of the Xperia S is that it stays clean - it comes out of your pocket free from lint and fluff." 3.5/5 Stars

"The Xperia P suffers from some build quality issues. And while performance is generally nippy, I found the software to be glitchy and buggy -- at least on the test unit I was using." 3.5/5 Stars

"The battery also warrants a mention. It’s fully integrated into the handset so theoretically it should provide better efficiency, right? Wrong. The Xperia P was out of juice after seven hours. Seven hours doesn’t sound that bad, but compare it to the notoriously bad iPhone 4S, which outlasted the Xperia P by an additional two hours. Ouch."

"The Sony Xperia P isn’t a bad phone by a long shot, and will, I suspect make a section of customers very happy. But if you’re looking at Sony as a company – as a whole – I don’t know why the P exists, and I almost wish it didn’t. It’s just not as special as a Sony product traditionally should be."

"The 16GB memory can’t be expanded which is a shame, especially as the inviting screen and dual core A9 processor make the Xperia P ideal for all apps and games. " 3/5 Stars
